The Mundo Program in Manhattan
Mind-Body Self-Care for Headaches and Migraines
with Jan Mundo, CMSC, CMT, CBCT, RSME

Mondays, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, 11/13, 12/4
6:30–8:30 pm (plus Thanksgiving break conference call)

If you suffer from headaches, you’re not alone. Fifty million people in the U.S. have chronic headaches, and 36 million of them, mostly women, have debilitating migraines.

Current medical treatment is often lengthy, frustrating, and ineffective — and does not address the root of the problem. Migraine is seen as a life sentence where healing is impossible. Patients are burdened by rebound headaches from medication overuse, which results in episodes that are more frequent and painful.

The good news is: You don’t have to suffer.

You can sustain a life without pain.
Headache healer Jan Mundo has been helping people with headaches and migraines for more than forty-five years. Her program teaches headache sufferers how to relieve and prevent their cycles of pain with practical actions.

A 2001 research study of program participants showed that patients were able to reduce their migraine frequency by 41 percent and relief medications by 52 percent. These results were published in Cephalalgia, an international medical journal.

Get to the root of the problem.
The Mundo Program teaches how to eliminate headaches once and for all – without drugs and their side effects — no matter what you’ve tried. You will receive: evaluation tools, guidelines, handouts, practices, and homework, bolstered by individualized assessments and coaching that all empower you to move forward in your process. Weekly attendance is essential because each lesson holds a key to headache healing and helps build the foundation and skills needed for the next lesson.

A whole-person approach changes lives.
The program works because it is holistic. It integrates your whole self. You’re not just your headaches, medications, and foods. You’re a whole person – from diet, lifestyle, daily habits, thoughts, moods, and emotions to posture, breathing, stress, bodily tension, and life history.

This is the only program that teaches you how to relieve your headache or migraine on-the-spot. Mundo Method hands-on therapy is a pioneering touch and concentration protocol that works with the actual sensations of your pain. However, with the program’s emphasis on prevention, most students rarely need to use it.

Group learning is conducive to healing.
Attending the Mundo Program in group format is a valuable and gratifying experience. Headache patients often suffer alone. In a group, participants learn from each others’ trials, successes, and missteps–and realize they’re not alone. They cheer each other on and learn to listen compassionately to others and themselves without falling into blame, shame, and victimhood.

As a result, they move beyond pain and fear and begin to feel a new sense of freedom to enjoy and create the lives they’ve always wanted.

Achieve lasting results.
After completing the Mundo Program, you too will have fewer, less painful headaches or none at all, feel more in control and in touch with your body, feelings, and stress, and be able to relieve and prevent your pain naturally/

Help for Migraines: A Somatic Approach

migraine-pain-1-e1488390338287.jpeg

I am honored that my article “Help for Migraines: A Somatic Approach” was featured in the March 2017 Annual Green Issue of Massage Magazine for bodywork professionals. In the piece, illustrated with some of my prevention techniques, I describe this disabling condition and demonstrate my special touch therapy approach. Sadly, touch therapies are often neglected in traditional migraine treatment.

Here’s an excerpt:

Migraines Imitate Life

Although our contemporary stressors and caffeinated culture play their roles, migraines are not thoroughly modern. Remedies date back to ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. With growing precision, due to recent imaging technologies, researchers have studied migraines for decades, and yet their exact neurobiological mechanisms remain a mystery.

The underlying causes, or triggers, however, are fairly identifiable using good detective work. In my experience, most people embody a combination of factors, often a veritable perfect storm that add ups to create cycles of pain.

From diet, lifestyle, environment and physical factors to medications and hormones, how we live can help or hurt us. This isn’t about blaming the victim; it’s about helping people live in ways that support their well-being.

Family history and cultural background are also part of the equation: How people were raised and learned to feel about, view and treat their bodies and themselves in sickness and in health can also factor into their headaches.

Do they push through pain and ignore it?

Do they feel ashamed, weak, or guilty when they get sick?

Do they take a pill to keep going, instead of resting or slowing down?

Do they only have bodily awareness when sick or in pain?

I hope you find the article helpful. If you are moved by it, please share and leave a comment on their website or here. Thank you!

Mundo Method Hands-on Headache Therapy

Four-day Professional Training

March 26-29*, 9 am-5 pm
New York City • $1200

*New dates!

Do any of your clients or patients suffer from headaches or migraines? Chances are they do. And how about you? Do you get them too? Desperate for pain relief, headache sufferers often get caught in a cycle of taking too much medication too often, which can cause more frequent and intense headaches, but what else can they do? A massage might help relieve a tension headache but make a migraine worse. Practitioners want to help, but tried-and-true methods may not always work, especially with migraines.

The Mundo Method is a subtle touch and focused concentration protocol that works with the actual felt sensations of a headache or migraine. It’s a dynamic process whereby each change determines the next move. It’s literally “bio” “feedback” with no machine required! Tension, migraine, and combination headaches have different characteristics and require different approaches. One technique eases held fascia, another “stills” migraine pulsations, and another releases stuck pain to help the migraine “bloom” in order to work with and move it out.

Migraines affect far more than your head. They affect your entire being with a cascading set of symptoms, such as visual, sound, and smell disturbances, disorientation, nausea, and vomiting. But the words can’t describe how horrible people feel. Most chronic sufferers sense their migraines are like entities unto themselves that can feel stuck or even move around like little gophers!

It’s extremely rewarding to lift away the pain and associated symptoms of someone who has been suffering for days, weeks, months, even years. It’s fascinating to palpate and manipulate a variety of headache sensations and manifestations and feel them dissipate and have that correlate to the client’s relief. Practitioners who suffer from headaches or migraines, or have family or friends who do, have an affinity for working with them because they understand first-hand how debilitating they are and want to help.

The Mundo Method is unique in several ways:

  • It works with locating, palpating, identifying, and manipulating specific felt sensations.
  • You have to be it to see it. When you’re centered and your touch is soft, your hands are more sensitive, assured, and effective, and the client can relax.
  • Because stress, worry, and fear can keep a headache in place, clients are gently coached in using their breathing, awareness, and posture during treatment.
  • For the most part, the therapy is delivered with the client seated and practitioner standing.

Participants will learn:

  • definitions, descriptions, and characteristics of the major headache types.
  • palpation skills to distinguish tension, migraine, and “mixed” headaches.
  • how to work on each headache type with subtle touch and directed mental focus.
  • how to center and position themselves and the client for maximum effectiveness.
  • mind-body relief and prevention techniques (seated/table) for shoulders, neck, head, face.
  • how to work on their own headaches or migraines with the Mundo Method.

Attendees will receive:

  • written handouts of distinctions, definitions, and techniques.
  • treatment evaluation forms.
  • assessments and coaching during the course.
  • homework practicum.

Who should attend?

Health and wellness professionals, including: bodywork practitioners, massage therapists, mind-body practitioners and instructors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurse practitioners, nurses, doctors, physician assistants, and allied caregivers.
